Zachary M. Herron, 26, died on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, after a devastating early-morning crash at the intersection of U.S. Highway 301, also known as Five Chop Road, and Way Road in Orangeburg County, South Carolina.
According to authorities, the collision occurred at approximately 5:50 a.m. as dense fog covered the area and significantly reduced visibility for motorists.
Zachary Herron Dies at Scene
Herron was identified as the driver and sole occupant of a 2015 Chevrolet Camaro traveling north on U.S. Highway 301. The Camaro collided with a 2024 Volvo tractor-trailer that was attempting to turn south at the intersection.
Herron suffered fatal injuries in the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and sole occupant of the tractor-trailer was not injured.
The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office and South Carolina Highway Patrol are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Fog Reported at Time of Collision
Orangeburg County Coroner Sean Fogle said the area was experiencing very heavy fog when the crash occurred. The reduced visibility created difficult driving conditions during the early morning hours.
Dense fog can make it difficult for motorists to see approaching vehicles, judge distances and recognize changing traffic conditions, particularly at intersections and along busy highways.
Authorities continue to urge drivers to exercise caution when visibility is severely limited and to adjust their speed and driving accordingly.
