Renee Good Obituary, Death – Family Files Federal Lawsuits Over Fatal Minneapolis Shooting
The family of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old Minneapolis woman who was fatally shot during a federal immigration enforcement operation in January, has filed two federal civil lawsuits seeking damages and accountability over the circumstances surrounding her death.
The lawsuits were filed Thursday, October 1, 2026, nearly nine months after Good was killed on January 7 during an immigration enforcement operation in south Minneapolis. Her partner, Becca Good, and her brother, Brent Ganger, are plaintiffs in both cases.
Family Files Two Federal Lawsuits
One lawsuit names the United States of America as the defendant and brings a wrongful-death claim under Minnesota law. The complaint includes allegations involving assault, battery, false imprisonment, negligence and emotional distress arising from the events that led to Good’s death.
The second lawsuit names ICE officer Jonathan Ross and several current and former federal officials. It alleges a conspiracy to interfere with civil rights and includes claims concerning the actions of federal immigration personnel involved in the operation.
The lawsuits were filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota. According to the family’s attorneys, the legal actions seek damages for Good’s death, the losses suffered by her family and the emotional harm experienced by Becca Good, who witnessed the shooting.
What Happened to Renee Good
Good was fatally shot inside her vehicle on January 7, 2026, during Operation Metro Surge, a federal immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis.
According to reporting and the newly filed lawsuits, Good and her partner were present near the federal operation when the encounter occurred. Federal authorities have maintained that Ross’s use of deadly force was justified and that Good’s vehicle presented a threat.
The family’s legal filings dispute that account and allege that the shooting violated federal use-of-force policies and Good’s civil rights. Video footage of the encounter has also become an important part of the continuing dispute over what happened immediately before the shots were fired.
Because the allegations in the lawsuits are claims made by the plaintiffs and have not been established as facts by a court, the competing accounts remain part of the ongoing legal process.
Investigation and Legal Proceedings
Good’s death generated significant public attention in Minneapolis and became part of broader scrutiny surrounding federal immigration enforcement in the city.
The legal proceedings now give Good’s family another avenue to present evidence and arguments concerning the shooting. Earlier efforts by Minnesota authorities to obtain federal evidence related to the shooting also led to separate legal proceedings.
The newly filed complaints name Ross along with several federal officials, including Stephen Miller, Kristi Noem, Thomas Homan and Gregory Bovino, among others. The defendants will have an opportunity to respond to the allegations as the cases move through federal court.
Remembering Renee Good
Renee Good was a mother of three whose death left behind her partner, children, parents, siblings and a wider circle of family and friends. Her family has continued seeking answers about the events that led to her death.
The October 1 lawsuits represent a significant new development in a case that has remained under public scrutiny since the January shooting. The proceedings are expected to examine the circumstances of the encounter, the actions of federal personnel and the family’s allegations concerning the events surrounding Good’s death.
For her loved ones, the legal action comes after months of mourning and efforts to obtain answers. The cases will now proceed through the federal court system, where the allegations and evidence can be examined as the litigation develops.
