The West Virginia veterans community is mourning the passing of Steven Craig “Steve” Mooney, Director of Operations for the West Virginia Department of Veterans Assistance and a longtime advocate for veterans and their families.
Mooney devoted more than two decades to military service before continuing his commitment to helping others through his work with West Virginia’s veteran population. Throughout his career, he was recognized for his leadership, service and dedication to people who had served their country.

A Distinguished Military Career
Mooney served for 23 years in the military before retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer 3 with the West Virginia Army National Guard and the 2nd Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group (Airborne).
His military service included deployments to Egypt, Afghanistan and Iraq. During his career, he received several military distinctions, including the Combat Action Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge and Meritorious Service Medal.
Those years in uniform shaped the experience and perspective he later brought to his work supporting veterans throughout West Virginia.
Continued Service to Veterans
Following his military retirement, Mooney continued serving others through his work with the West Virginia Department of Veterans Assistance.
