Conrad Cronos Lant Obituary, Death - Venom Frontman Dies at 63

Conrad “Cronos” Lant, the vocalist and bassist who became the defining frontman of British heavy metal band Venom, has died at the age of 63. Venom announced his death on October 1, 2026, prompting tributes from fans, fellow musicians and the wider extreme-metal community.

Lant was one of the central figures behind Venom’s early sound and identity. Through his vocals, bass playing, songwriting and creative direction, he helped establish a style that would have a lasting influence on heavy and extreme metal.

The cause of death has not been publicly disclosed. Venom’s announcement confirmed his passing but did not provide details about what led to his death.

A Defining Figure in Venom

Born Conrad Thomas Lant, Cronos became closely associated with Venom after joining the Newcastle-based group in the late 1970s. He eventually became the band’s vocalist and bassist and remained its most consistent member through decades of lineup changes.

Venom’s early albums, including Welcome to Hell, Black Metal, At War With Satan and Possessed, became important releases in the development of extreme metal. The 1982 album Black Metal was particularly influential, with its title eventually becoming the name of an entire musical genre.

The band’s raw sound, aggressive performances and dark imagery helped influence later generations of musicians in black metal, thrash metal and other extreme-metal styles. Venom’s early work became a reference point for artists who pushed heavy music toward faster, darker and more abrasive forms.

A Career Spanning More Than Four Decades

Cronos remained connected to Venom for much of his life, despite periods away from the group. He left in the late 1980s before returning in the 1990s and continued leading the band through numerous personnel changes.

Over the course of his career, he performed on numerous Venom recordings and remained active with the band into 2026. The group’s latest album, Into Oblivion, was released earlier this year.

His contribution to Venom went beyond performing. Cronos played an important role in shaping the band’s sound, imagery and overall creative identity, helping establish the distinctive character that made Venom one of the best-known names in early extreme metal.

Tributes Following His Death

Following the announcement, tributes began emerging throughout the metal community. Venom described Cronos’ voice, bass and creative vision as being at the heart of the band for more than four decades.

His son Nathan also thanked Venom’s longtime fans for the support they had given his father throughout his career, saying that his father’s music would continue to live on. Venom extended its condolences to Nathan, Hel, friends and everyone who knew Cronos.

Former Venom guitarist Jeff “Mantas” Dunn also paid tribute following the news of Cronos’ death, reflecting on the history they shared as members of the pioneering band.

A Lasting Musical Legacy

Cronos leaves behind a legacy that extends well beyond Venom’s original recordings. The band’s early music helped influence the development of several extreme-metal movements, while Black Metal gave its name to one of the genres that emerged from that broader musical evolution.

For generations of metal listeners, his distinctive voice, bass playing and uncompromising creative approach became closely associated with Venom’s identity. His work helped take heavy music into territory that would influence countless musicians in the decades that followed.
